You’re Missing a Great Game!

basketball hoop.jpg

“You’re missing a great game!” This is something you often hear yelled at officials by displeased basketball fans from the heights of their seats. Somehow they believe the screaming of insults to people in stripes will make the calls better. I am still puzzled by this logic.

It actually makes no sense at all.

Being wrong doesn’t make you miss a great game; not showing up does.

Did you catch that truth?

Missing a great game starts when you don’t show up.

In the same way, enjoying the great game of life means we show up. We play. We are open to discovering the lessons and principles that will help us along the way. We learn, we keep going, and we fall in love with life.

You have plans for your life. Plans to accomplish your dreams, goals, and passions. What will be the difference between you enjoying the great game of life or missing it?

Here is what I know to be true:

Once you decide to take something on, to go after something that matters, to make a difference, this is the biggest step you must take to enjoy the great game of life:

Start!

Simply begin.

Take one step, even if it is small.

It is amazing how experiences become far less monumental than we think when we just put one foot in front of the other.

What step will you take today to make progress in your professional and personal life to ensure you don’t miss a great game?

Overcoming Your Fears!

I love this true story about the human penchant for worry.

Larry David, the creator of “Seinfeld“ and “curb your enthusiasm“ was working as a cab driver in New York City before his big break.

David once told the story of someone getting out of his cab and him being struck with the fear that “what if no one ever got into my cab again?“

Actually, fear about potential negative outcomes is natural – – it’s designed to prepare us should they happen.

However, constant focus on negative outcomes draws them to us creating an unhappy self-fulfilling prophecy.

Where is Your Focus?

When I was 16, I took driving lessons from a driving instructor.

I’d been driving for over a year and because I’d had a couple of accidents my dad wanted me to undergo training by a professional.

The instructor and I only had one lesson because I only had one problem to solve — and it’s the same problem I and most people struggle with in every area of our lives.

The instructor said, “I want you to hold your hands completely steady on the wheel — don’t swerve.”

I did.

“Now, look ahead but focus more to your left.” The car glided to the left.

“Shift your focus more to the right.” He said. The car slipped silently to the right.

“The problem,” he summarized, “is that you’re wanting to drive straight ahead but you’re focusing everywhere else. And the car goes where you look.”

Question: where in your own life, are you wanting to go one direction but looking somewhere else?

Today, let’s correct course once and for all.

Think It’s Possible to Quit Complaining????  International Motivational Speaker, and #1 Best-selling Author of “A Compliant Free World” Will Bowen Shows Us How! In 2006 he was delivering a series on prosperity, and noticed that his audience all said they wanted greater prosperity– that is: more stuff.  But, they all complained about what they already had. He suggested everyone break the complaining habit by going 21 days in a row without complaining. Will gave purple rubber bracelets to everyone in attendance urging them to put the bracelet on either wrist and switch it to the other wrist with every spoken complaint. Will’s idea EXPLODED around the world, and continues today! So far, more than 11 million complaint bracelets have been distributed worldwide. The six millionth Complaint Free® bracelet was personally presented by Will to the late Dr. Maya Angelou. Featured on Oprah, The Today Show, Dr. Oz, CBS Sunday Morning, The ABC Evening News, NewsweekPeople magazine, Forbes magazine, O magazine, Chicken Soup for the Soul; Will also writes a daily blog with thousands of subscribers. How 15 Minutes and $15 or Less Will Create Amazing Impacts!

Do you have 15 minutes and $15 or less to see an amazing impact in your business and life? This principle works!

Recently I  presented at an event hosted by the University of Michigan, and enjoyed dinner afterwards with my client, Marilyn.

During casual conversation while deciding what to order, my host mentioned she “goes hog-wild” for A&W Root Beer. Good thing she didn’t say Dom Perignon, since dinner was on me!

I made a mental note of her affinity for A&W Root Beer and pondered a few alternatives on the flight back.  Arriving home I jumped online for less than 15 minutes and ordered a case of A&W Root Beer for less than $15, which was delivered to her home address within three days.

Pretty cool. The moral of the story? I was re-booked there the following year,  right? Ehhhhh…..no.
I was referred to a colleague who booked me the following year, right?
Ehhhhh…..no.
In fact, over three years went by, and I didn’t hear anything from Marilyn!

Until one day, I received a phone call. Here is how it went:
Marilyn: “Andy…Hi—It’s Marilyn from up in Michigan, do you
remember me?”

Andy: “Sure I remember you, Marilyn. How are you doing?”
Marilyn: “I’m great! Hey, I wanted to tell you that I’m so sorry I
hadn’t kept in touch. You’re not going to believe this, but, the very
next day after your program…well, I quit my job! I’m doing
something completely different now. But, guess what….?”

Andy: “What?”
Marilyn: “I just became chair of the planning committee for our
upcoming conference, and we’d love for you to be our keynote
speaker. Are you available on August 23rd ?”
Andy: “Yes…that sounds great. Would love to do it!”

Once again after that event,  Marilyn and I again enjoyed dinner together. I just had to have this conversation:

Andy: “So, Marilyn, I have to ask…After three years, what made you decide to track me down to present this program for you?”
Marilyn: “Sure, Andy. I’ve been waiting three years to tell you this. You know, I love your program. You’re really a great speaker. But, there are plenty of other great speakers out there who also present great programs, as well. Do you remember that case of A&W Root Beer you shipped to my home?”

Andy: “Sure….absolutely.”
Marilyn: “Andy, do you know I STILL have one can of that A&W Root Beer in my refrigerator, that I show my friends and family when they come over? That was the greatest small gesture that anyone has ever done for me when it wasn’t my birthday or Christmas.”

Wow!

As great as we think we are at what we do, there is another person, or another company, who can probably perform the same function or service just as well as we can.

So, what makes the difference? The little things. The little things which take 15 minutes or less, and $15  or less. What an amazing investment of so little time, and so little money.

We use the excuses of: “I don’t have enough time” and “I don’t have enough budget,” don’t
we?  Sure we do. We should always have 15 minutes or less, and $15 or less, to spend on the most important people in our life and career.

Fifteen minutes per day is just 1/100 th of our time.  Here’s the challenge! What amazing impact can you make today with your special client, significant other, employee, or new contact, using just 15 minutes and $15 dollars or less?

The Get PR Famous Formula!

If you’re looking to get more exposure for your product, service or brand and/or wanting to be “famous” in your industry and stand out as THE expert, it’s time to incorporate the Get PR Famous Formula into your regular marketing plan. By adding visibility into your day-to-day plan, you WILL be exposed to more potential customers and you will grow your business.

The Get PR Famous Formula is what you use to attract and pitch the media. Getting local media coverage makes you a star in your community. Getting national media coverage gives you tremendous credibility with potential clients and customers. The proven system is simple. You want to be newsworthy, you want to create great hooks, and you want to find the right journalist.

Last year alone, the people who followed this system were exposed to almost one billion
people and generated over eight figures in sales from free publicity.

Step 1Be Newsworthy
Being newsworthy is as simple as using outside of the box thinking to come up with creative story ideas:

1) Take a national trend or study and show how it relates to the local market.

2) Niche what you do and pitch around that. Think of a target. What do you do that is in the
small red circle that makes you unique in your industry?

3) Sign up for Help a Reporter Out/HARO, www.HelpaReporter.com. This is a free media query service where media outlets are looking for sources and quotes for national magazine articles, television shows, newspapers, and blogs. This is THE fastest and easiest way to get national media coverage. Want some tips on how to respond to HARO queries, get the free guide at www.FreeGiftFromChristina.com .

Step 2Create Great Hooks
The hook is your subject line. It’s how you get the journalist to read your email pitch. A hook is as simple as what you see on a magazine cover. People are paid a lot of money to get you to make a $5.00 impulse purchase in the grocery store check-out line based on the “hooks” you see on the magazine cover. My favorite is AARP Magazine. Just Google, “AARP magazine covers” and see what’s there. Do the same for industry related magazines or magazines you know your customers are reading and see what they are using for hooks. Then, just plug and play your newsworthy story idea into an existing hook and you’re one step closer to success!

Step 3Find the Right Journalist
This step is vital because you don’t want to send, for example, your business-related story to the book editor. People are always amazed at how frequently I get on television and in
magazines and newspapers. It’s all about finding the right person to pitch. I’m always asked how I do it. Here is my top-secret resource for finding journalists…. It’s Google. Google is a question search engine, “Who writes about real estate for [name of publication].” Locally, you’ll usually get their name, email, and phone number all in one search. Nationally can sometimes take a page or two of digging but they will be there. A resource I just discovered to find email addresses is, https://hunter.io. Give Hunter a try if you can’t find them on Google.

By putting these three steps in place when pitching the media, you will be light years ahead of  your competition and you will stand out to journalists. The more you pitch, the more you are seen as a valuable resource and it won’t be long before the media is reaching out to you for quotes about your expertise.

Disruption: The New World of Work!

We are in a brawl with few rules, where the fast, adaptive, and those moving quickly will remove the slow, over-thinking, and complacent. In the past, change was sporatic, lasting for only a short time, and gradual.  Now, change is constant as business, technology, and society itself continue to evolve at an unprecedented pace that will only accelerate. Talent, ideas, speed and distinction are keys to winning in the New World of Work.

Individuals, teams, and organizations that fail to develop a distinct ‘brand’ and separate themselves from the pack in this New World of Work will find themselves vulnerable, uncomfortable, and at the mercy of other people, events, or the competition. The waters of change are unnerving for many. But the fact is they will only become more turbulent. For organizations and employees who are unprepared, the future will be devastating.

Employers, customers and clients (external and internal) have an abundance of choices today. What would draw someone to you? What makes you different? What are you doing to leverage these forces in order to grow, adapt, innovate, and thrive in the future?

For individuals, say hello to the age of self-determination. The days of 25-35 years with one employer and a gold watch retirement are long gone. The era of ‘entitlement’ is history.

Today it is about your ability to effectively answer these  4 questions:
1. Who are you? What makes you distinctive in this ‘sea of sameness?’
2. How are you dramatically unique or different?
3. How do you make a significant difference, or create an astonishing overt benefit?
4. What is/are your reason/s why anyone should believe in you? Convince me!

What will it take for a team or department to avoid the possibility of being ‘outsourced’ or eliminated? Staying competitive, streamlined, flexible, and innovative is paramount in the New World of Work. Teams and departments are coming under intense scrutiny. Can the work be done faster, cheaper and better on the outside? Savvy leaders know they must adopt new strategies and innovate to stay ahead.

Please internalize this – Individuals, teams, departments and organizations are depreciating assets. What made us successful in the past is not the ticket to the success in the future. You are a depreciating asset…
AND, You must invest…
AND, You must have a renewal investment plan…
AND, That plan must be formal…
AND, You must schedule routine personal, team and departmental
‘Brand You’ audits.
Create a CAUSE, not a business.

One Person CAN Make a Big Difference!

For reasons I don’t get, some people intentionally do things that cause themselves pain. Maybe you like to eat hot peppers. Maybe you run marathons. Maybe you DVR Dr. Phil.

No matter how much pain and suffering you seek by choice, no one while
driving ever comes upon a long line of brake lights on a hot freeway and says, “A traffic
jam? Alright! What could be better than finding myself in a spontaneous parking lot
while aspirating diesel fumes? ”

Instead, you grind your teeth and fantasize about super-villain style ways you’d like to remove that stupid smoking dump truck idling five feet ahead. The most frustrating part is how helpless you feel. The problem is just too big for one person to solve. Or is it?

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal reported the surprising news that the
behavior of a single driver can make a difference in unsnarling a traffic jam simply by backing off and letting others in ahead of themselves.

In other words, the generosity of anyone makes things better for everyone. It’s the power of one that can make a difference. Don’t you wonder what other big issues could be significantly affected by the choices of one person? A broken work culture? Employee disengagement? Customer service? The answer to all of these and more is, Yes! And it doesn’t have to come from the top down, either.

It takes an understanding of what people need and a willingness to put their needs before your own that will make the difference.  No matter where we are in the power structure, we’re all just people with common needs. These include the need to be recognized and appreciated, the need to feel included and the need to feel that our personal problems matter to others.

A recent Gallup poll found that nearly two-thirds of workers reported that they hadn’t been thanked on the job one time in the previous 12 months. Although that’s sad, it’s also empowering to know changing that miserable statistic is within the grasp of every person every day who choose to make a difference.

Other choices each individual can choose resulting in making a difference in the work place and making it more joyful and less stressful include:

  • Expressing enthusiasm – Enthusiastic and positive people influence other people’s behavior up to a third degree of separation.
  • Not so random acts of kindness – When kindness is random it can change someone’s life. What would happen if it were a daily objective?
  • Shared laughter –Providing shared laughter brings people together in ways only surpassed by the way people come together after a calamity (but lots cheaper and easier than staging a flood).
  • Use positive words – The words we choose not only communicate outwardly but inwardly as well. Dr. James Pennebaker of the University of Texas at Austin has concluded that patients that use positive words express a dimension of happiness even when illness or challenges exist and those who used positive words to discuss their challenges did significantly better than those who used negative words about their illness or pain.

These are just a few ways to change the world around you with your influence and
willingness to meet the sometimes hidden but critical needs that we all have to feel
recognized, connected and uplifted.

It’s about putting others before yourself and, just like in a traffic jam, that can help you and everyone around you to get unstuck and rolling in the right direction.

Selecting an uplifting, informative and motivational speaker is critical to the success of any conference or meeting because that decision will determine the emotional impact of the event. The attendees will remember a great keynote speaker long after the food and surroundings have faded from memory. Dave Caperton is a nationally-known humorous speaker who teaches his audiences how to laugh while they learn how to use healthy and compassionate humor to manage stress, cope with change and boost personal and organizational success. “Dave Caperton is awesome. His background as an educator and comedian allowed everyone to learn and laugh the entire night.” shared Mike Patricelli of Boeing Aerospace.  To have Dave at your next event contact 888-766-3155 or see  Dave Caperton- Speaker

You Aren’t the Only One Having a “Crazy” Day!

You aren’t the only one having a “crazy” day.

The reply hit my inbox a full three days after I had emailed a contract requiring a simple electronic signature, a legally binding image created after the world got tired of searching for pens.

The contract was attached along with a message: “Sorry it’s taken me so long to get to this. It’s just been CRAZY around here.” Yes, crazy was typed in all caps.

Later that day, as I waited in a bar for an old friend, I glanced at my watch. Did he forget about our dinner plans? It was 45 minutes after our scheduled meeting time.

Five minutes later he breezed in. “Sorry man. My life is just so crazy right now.”

I tried to summon a smile to hide my annoyance. It didn’t work. He noticed.

“What? I’m here. Let’s have a beer.”

Not so fast, buddy. Same goes for my supposedly haggard contract recipient. It’s 2019, and I have grown weary of everybody assuming they are the only ones who live in a world of permanent madness and are therefore entitled to be tardy whenever they choose, chalking it up to “craziness.” Our morning routines — particularly those of us with school aged children — are crazy; our jobs are crazy; our weekends, designed to be 48-hour respites of relaxation, invariably feel like workdays. We arise at 6 to shuttle our kids to all-day sporting events, deal with at least one technological failure and invariably answer multiple work-related emails even though we vowed not to.

While many of my friends resolve to lose 10 pounds beginning January 1, each new year I choose a long simmering internal grievance and vow to take it public. In 2018, I decided I would publicly shame anyone who barged into an elevator before letting others exit. A businessman staring at his cellphone in a Miami Beach hotel most recently incurred my wrath.

“Would it kill you to wait?” I asked, purposely ramming his shoulder as I stepped into the lobby. He glanced at me briefly but didn’t respond. He was most likely having a crazy day.

This year, I will not-so-subtly remind everyone that there is no excuse for using the “crazy” excuse. I may have to embellish my own life events, but it will be so worth it when I finally receive that long-awaited email from that individual who feels only his or her life is running at warp speed.

“Talk about crazy,” I’ll reply. “A meteor just crashed into my house, obliterating the second floor. Lucky for me, I was downtown organizing a 20,000-person fun run for prostate cancer awareness. Sorry this response is so short. Right now there’s an insurance adjustor, three NASA employees and some dude from CNN standing in what’s left of my driveway.”

The next time my friend enters the bar late, blaming a crazy day for his lack of punctuality, I’ll fire back. “Yeah, I can relate. My car, with my cellphone and wallet inside, got stolen about an hour ago. I had to borrow somebody else’s phone so I could call an Uber. By the way, do you mind paying for dinner?”

Finally, a word of warning to all physicians, cable repair technicians and auto mechanics: Do not for one moment consider it OK to make me wait more than 15 minutes past our agreed upon appointment or pickup time due to the “craziness” surrounding your place of business. For I will delay payment for your services well into 2019 due to my “crazy financial status.” While you unsuccessfully attempt to decipher that phrase’s meaning, I will escort you out the door or exit your premises, leaving you to contemplate the absurdity of your defense.

Please stay out of my way if you see me in an elevator.

Going Back Old School in a Digital World!

This time of year is all about…

  • setting goals,
  • making resolutions, and
  • planning sessions.

These are traditionally a big part of the turn of a new year.

What else can you do to find success in 2019? I think we forget one critical path to achieving new goals…it is the HABITS we have.

If you want to be a leader that evolves and grows consistently, you must have the right habits. Intentional habits are essential to many things in life. Look at a person’s habits, and it will tell you a lot about that person.

My favorite tool for changing habits and tracking progress is old school. I have been using it for three years now. I love my wall calendar that shows the full year. I track my workouts, my nutrition, and my most important projects. I have a color coding that helps me see my consistency. If you want to change your momentum for 2019, you must be intentional about your habits.

Here is my calendar for the year. You can see where I was consistent and where I wasn’t.

2018 Wall Calendar

If you want to get a calendar like this, use this link. I love my calendar. I am ready to get started on 2019.

How about you? I’d love to know what #habits you are tracking to make this next year epic.

Here is to an ahhhhhh-mazing 2019,

P.S. You want to make more money ( or better yet keep more money). You want more time off. You want to simplify your life. No matter what you do…track your habits on this calendar.
