Morning! from Thom Gossom Jr.

Morning!

The morning air is crisp, not yet cool. The sun’s rays reach through the majestic trees, an invitation to the great day ahead. The bay glistens in the background. It’s beautiful! The involuntary grin deeply creases my face. I say my prayers. I’m happy!

Some people go to therapists. Some meditate. Others search daily for that elusive inner peace. For me it’s morning’s freshness and my bicycle at 6am, cruising through the neighborhood. Morning is the gift we’re all given. The bicycle is the gift I give myself.

I’ve been riding bicycles all my life. Love it! I remember my first lessons with training wheels, my first lesson without them. I remember crying when I realized my dad was not behind me holding me up. Then I promptly fell.

Most mornings in good weather, sometimes in not so good weather, I raise the garage door and leave the house for a 75-minute ride through the neighborhood. It’s peaceful. Quiet. There are hardly any cars, dogs, or people; just me, the morning and the promising day ahead.

“The Bicycle Man” they call me. I’ve been called worse.

There are three regular riders on the circuit as I call it, in their colorful bike outfits. They ride as a group always with a bright “good morning” for me. There are some regular walkers offering big smiles while soaking up that morning promise. “Good mornings” abound! Like warm coffee on a cold morning the day flows.

Peaceful solitude only lasts so long. After the 7 o’clock hour the cars, school buses, and people start to flow. I make my way back to our home.

The newness of another day!

Thom Gossom Jr. defied all odds, and as a sought-after Keynote Speaker is on a mission to help others do the same! Thom has come full circle in life; from a walk-on determined athlete in challenging times, using the education he received to become a successful Corporate America leader, succeeding as an Award-winning Hollywood Actor, becoming a best-selling author and film producer, owning his own company-Best Gurl Inc., a Communications Firm, being a sought after Keynote Speaker, serving as the Chair of the Auburn University Foundation Board, to now inspiring, motivating, educating and entertaining audiences all over the globe. You Have to Slow Down to Speed Up!

You Have to Slow Down to Speed Up

Today is the start of the second half of the year. I am sitting here early on a Sunday morning with a cup of steaming hot coffee considering that today marks the ending of the first half of 2018 and the start of the next.

You are probably like me and spend most of your time working…doing…creating your life. However, sometimes we need to look back and be honest with ourselves so we can move forward.

In other words, you have to slow down to speed up.
Are you where you want to be in 2018? You likely have accomplished some of your goals and still, have more to do. Same for me.
Here is a simple exercise if you want to evaluate yourself.
1. Look at the numbers.
Can you quantify what has happened in your life and business to show how far you have come? List out your accomplishments. Be careful not to forget the ones that were easy for you, but come as a struggle for others. List out your income, profit, skills gained, weight and your PR in health. Don’t rush this as it is helpful to see have far you have come.
2. Write about your experiences.

What experiences stand out for you? What struggles did you overcome? What moments made you proud?

3. Get clear on the next six months.
What do you want from the next six months? To lose weight…more profit…2 weeks off to travel…write your book (the one you have been talking about). List all the things you want.
4. Find your one thing.

Which of these is most important to you? Can you narrow it down to one thing? Can you identify the one goal or experience that means the most to you? You have other goals and other experiences, but can you determine what is MOST important to you for the second half of the year?

Ok with this, you have something that excites you and inspires you to live a bigger life. It can also be scary too.

What to do next?

I know for sure that to create something new that you have to create new paths to get there. You have to let go of the old to create a new way of being.  If you share with me your ONE thing, I will send you a free tool to ensure that you make it. This is not a sales strategy or some other manipulation. It is a simple way to align yourself with your “one thing.” All you have to do is reply here and tell me what you want in your life in 2018.

Here is you…and your next six months. Let’s create something that inspires you for the inside.
You are awesome!

“I Would Outsource Brushing My Teeth If I Could!”

There is a seismic shift happening in the workforce and only a minority of CEOs and entrepreneurs seem to be aware of it.

The most innovative companies are already experiencing substantial benefits as the role of the W2 employee is changing rapidly.

In today’s hyper-competitive business landscape, getting things done faster and cheaper could mean the difference between turning a profit or going belly up. Entrepreneurs and small business owners have no choice but to shift from a “Do it how it has always been done” mentality to one that asks, “How can we work smarter, not harder?”

We must adapt to a much more flexible, almost on-demand structure to get everything done within budget.

My entrepreneurial journey is a true testament to this movement. In my last business venture, I found myself in a tough spot: Money was extremely tight, and we encountered significant product challenges. In order to pull it together and grow, I had to stretch my dollars further. I had to accomplish essential business tasks while still driving marketing and sales. My stress level was through the roof, but the only way I knew to make it work was to put in even longer hours.

When I met with a colleague who opened my eyes to the wonders of outsourcing, I was blown away. He showed me how to get innovative marketing and sales projects done for pennies on the dollar. What I, and most business owners, thought would cost thousands of dollars, he was doing for a few hundred dollars―or less! I couldn’t get home fast enough to figure out how to replicate his results. After five hours of research, I discovered a whole new world that would change my trajectory as an entrepreneur. It also dramatically changed how I execute in my personal life.

I realized the opportunities for efficiency and speed coupled with monetary savings are substantial. It’s not just about low cost. It’s about velocity of execution, getting work done two or three times as fast. With online platforms, you have instant access to millions of low-cost and highly talented firms, contractors and freelancers from around the world. With no overhead or marketing expense, they perform incredible work at unbelievably low prices. The “instant gig” economy of virtual on-demand workers is revolutionizing how businesses can and will operate.

Through outsourcing, I got more than US $10,000 worth of marketing and sales services for US $500, propelling my company forward almost overnight. I began outsourcing almost every aspect of my business―website development, telemarketing, graphic design, lead generation―you name it. Not only was I getting more done for less, but I had more time to focus on growing our operations. Soon I was even using creative growth hacking strategies like data scraping and data mining, two of the most powerful concepts I discovered, to grow my business at a very low cost. Such strategies enable you to create highly-targeted lead lists for pennies on the dollar.

And it’s not just marketing and sales. Even work such as Autocad drawings, financial modeling, recruiting, data management and 3D renderings are being done for a fraction of the cost and twice as fast.

And it’s not just international. Many of the firms and contractors are in the U.S. where talented executives with corporate backgrounds can now earn just as much if not more working from home on their terms.

In just a few months, our business was back on track, and I continued to build my skills. When I asked around, I was surprised to find that only 10% of entrepreneurs and business owners knew these freelance platforms and unique tools even existed. I knew this information would be the basis of my next business, where we would share our “addiction” to entrepreneurship and lean growth using these techniques. Over the past four years, as I have worked with business owners, I am always asked the same question: “How can we get started with outsourcing?”

Here are three tips that I share with my clients and audiences:

  1. The key to growing a successful business is to find an advantage and exploit it before your competition does. Typically, businesses run from the inside out: Most work is done internally and a few specialized projects are outsourced to freelancers. However, running your business from the outside in can save you money and increase productivity overnight. Outsourcing or automating repetitive tasks can free up time to build other critical components of your business. Outsourcing is a booming industry, even inside the U.S.: Forbes estimates that by 2020, 50% of American workers will be freelancers―making getting work done easier, cheaper and faster.2.
  2. Build a virtual team with a broad range of skills. Whether you need a website developer, graphic designer, content writer or marketing manager, it’s important to assemble a team of freelancers. Identifying tasks that are major time or money drains and outsourcing them can be the most effective use of your resources. Also, having an experienced “virtual business manager” to manage your team of freelancers can make outsourcing as seamless as possible. The unfolding business landscape will favor those who use freelancers to keep a leg up on the competition.3.
  3. Explore online tools to stay ahead of the technology and business curve. Hundreds of new tools hit the market every day―all engineered to make life easier for us. Spending an hour each week trying out one new tool can help you stay on top of the latest assets for business growth. Almost any area of your business can be improved with a tool. For example, Mouseflow tracks how web visitors interact with your website; Bond creates hand-made cards for customers; and Dashlane securely stores a company’s logins and passwords so you can safely share them with freelancers and outsourcing teams.

Adopting a “creative mindset” can be your secret weapon in building a stronghold in your industry. When it comes to starting or expanding your business, the sky’s the limit. Thinking outside of the box and being willing to try a new strategy goes a long way toward outpacing the competition.

What a Dedicated Entrepreneurial Spirit!

Kay and ShirleyRecently visited for the first time the Phillips Petroleum Company Museum located in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. The beginnings of this major oil company Phillips 66 began 107 years ago here in this city. In 2002 Phillips 66 merged with Conoco Oil Company and now the Corporate offices have been moved to Houston, with a new name Conoco Phillips. Remembering the Phillips 66 history is very important to this city, and this museum was a great community collaborative effort to make it happen!

Interesting to note that even though the merger changed the name somewhat, today there is another twist to the story because in 2012, Conoco Phillips repositioned into two stand-alone publicly traded companies, one of which is the Phillips 66 of today. You can view that entire timeline of both companies at http://www.phillips66.com/

The one spokeswoman I was honored to meet is Shirley Patterson, who now has 52 years of service with Phillips 66, and is not planning on retiring soon! She has many roles, but one she loves is volunteering at the Company Museum!

As you enter Shirley greets you and shares how to have the best experience while visiting both floors. She has personal stories to bring to life what you are seeing and feeling. She actually lived out the history and knew the officials and all the details of what you view as you travel back in time. You will be inspired as you see “the story of Phillips’ transformation from a small Bartlesville business to a global energy enterprise, and the extraordinary people who made it happen.”

Shirley is one of those “extraordinary” people! She is not originally from Oklahoma, but the close related state of Kansas. Her father was with the Walgreens Drug Stores and they traveled and moved all around. She ended up in Bartlesville working for Phillips 66 and raising her family.

You can tell from the spark in her eyes and the step in her walk that she is proud to be an employee of this outstanding company. She is a valued part of the past as well as the present and future. She has received many awards and is an active part of the Jane Phillips Society (formerly Jane Phillips Sorority) which was created in 1937 by a group of female employees at Phillips 66 whose motto is: “In building character, it pays to use only the best materials.” It was named after the wife of Frank Phillips who was the founder of the company. For many years this organization has contributed to the growth of women in the company, and given great service to the community providing scholarships and many needed contributions and services.

You can tell an Entrepreneurial spirit when you see one! Shirley Patterson is a shining example of how to live and work whether for a company or as the owner! Shirley takes ownership of her position and does whatever it takes to be the best wherever she is planted!

It was an honor to meet Shirley Patterson. I was introduced to her by my best friend of over 61 years, Kay Cunningham Reynolds, who is now a retired Phillips 66 employee with 38 years of service. See them pictured here together enjoying a great experience and history together!

Think you will keep working or are you looking for the day when you can retire? It is a personal choice, but as for me, retirement is not in my DNA! Here at “Simply” Sue Speaks! Global Booking Agency our speakers are wired with an Entrepreneurial spirit and are gifted to be able to help others create and be an Entrepreneur whether you are the owner or not!

Entrepreneurship at Its’ Best!

valerereneGreetings from Bartlesville, Oklahoma, home of Phillips 66 and my Hometown! On our journey here I was honored to meet many of those special  people who are making a difference in our workplace and our lives! I committed to showcasing to you those stories of hope and success!

Meet Valere Rene Gregory, Owner and Designer of Valere Rene-Handbags & Totes of Rogers, Arkansas! I was attracted to her business, which is located in downtown Rogers, with her creative window displays. As I entered the door she greeted me with a warm welcome, and invited me to touch and feel her handmade bags and totes. She also carries a creative line of jewelry and other gift items.

Her store was very organized and the colors are outstanding! As I wandered I noticed there were open doors in the back leading into the work area. It was well designed, and there was another person at work.

As I talked further with Valere, I learned her husband is a civil engineer, but found he also had some design skills and had created a wonderful design place for her, the front counter, and the work space. All are totally “green” and an inviting place to come and do what she does best!

In looking at Valere and her bright and wonderful smile, you would not imagine she has a serious health problem that had forced her to resign from a successful corporate career. Still feeling the need to contribute to the family income, she began making her handbags and totes out of her home, and using Social Media as her marketing plan, Valere soon found the demand was greater than she could accomplish out of her home and by herself.

So taking the risk she moved into this wonderful downtown area of Rogers, Arkansas, and hired an associate to help her keep the orders flowing and on time. They are now fully stocked and able to handle custom orders on demand.

I could not resist making gift purchases before leaving this wonderful place and experienced first hand the new “Square” display making it easy to do business with Valere Rene.

Valere is still able to be the creative artist, contributor to the future education of her children, wife, and Mom in spite of her health issues.

I was honored to meet and share Valere’s story of hope and success in a world where some feel that Entrepreneurship is not profitable in the times we are currently experiencing. What a great story of “reinventing” yourself and living out your passion and dreams! This is one of the many topics that our expert speakers and presenters here at “Simply” Sue Speaks! Global Booking Agency share with many audiences-globally.

When you are in the area make sure you stop in downtown Rogers, Arkansas at 210 South First Street, or visit www.facebook.com/Valere Rene Handbags & Totes   or her website http://vrhandbags.com/

Weekly #WOWfactor-Is It Time to Re-Invent?

reinventHappy Thankful Thursday from Ft. Worth, Texas! We are here for an annual business conference and as we toured Ft.
Worth last night I saw how this city has re-invented their downtown area to make it a safe attraction for families both in the day time and evenings. It is amazing the transformation since last year! Buildings and areas have been built, and we could see the results in the families that were flooding the streets.

This encouraged me to think of our workplace and what skills and solutions we are going to need for employment and operating successful businesses going forward.

Doesn’t re-invent sound better than change?  But where do we start? In reading many experts on this topic there are 3 major areas to address in making the leap to re-invent yourself and/or your company. These are the basics necessary to succeed and help others do the same!

These are:
Your Mindset- doesn’t everything begin first in the mind?
Plan- your personal and business model-including both time, skills, and finances needed to re-invent
Learn how to make collaboration with others work-this is a key area that is new and different for many

When is a good time to begin your re-invention?  Most of us know when life is not going well, or our businesses are not the exciting passionate places they once were!  The time is now, don’t delay!

I am honored to say I am on my 4th re-invention in my lifetime and loving every minute of it! It is possible to change and re-invent a healthy life full of dreams and working with and for the people that really value and appreciate you. There are jobs and opportunities waiting for you, time to reach out and find them!

Weekly #WOWfactor- “On the Road Again!”

mycarIt’s that time of the year, and we are getting ready to be “On the Road Again!”  We are honored to be invited guests and take part at an annual business conference. We could fly but as we love meeting new people, seeing business clients, catching up with friends and family, and exploring new places, driving is the only way for us!

This year we are starting out a little earlier, leaving on July 3, and will be spending July 4th week-end in Memphis! Can’t wait to see how Memphis celebrates this great holiday!  We will also be meeting our daughter, Wendy and Brian there, so will be an awesome time of catching up!

From there we will journey onto Oklahoma City and go back to my roots of living and working in Oklahoma. While there we will connect with business clients, see friends from grade school, see the plans of our next high school reunion (a big one!) and I have been asked to speak to a group about what I do and why I love it!

Next is the big event of attending a 5 day conference in the wonderful city of Ft. Worth, Texas! I love seeing what they have added to the downtown, meeting with special friends and business clients, enjoying the overwhelming events of the conference, and exploring places we have not visited before. Being from the West “I was country before country was cool” and now as an avatar of “Simply” Sue Speaks! it brings it all together for me!

Once all is done in Ft. Worth, we will wander back home with stops in Memphis, Sparta, Tenn, and Gatlinburg before coming back to reality on July 16th. With all the modern technology I will not miss a beat in our business, connecting with my assistant, our clients, and the professionals I represent! We call this a blended life and love seeing how we can make it all come together and enjoy the moments we are in at the time!  We also love how we have family and friends who will be handling the events at our home while we are gone! They make sure our home is secure 24/7, our plants are watered, our Lifetree Cafe is open on each Thursday we are away, and everything is ready to welcome us back into the life we are blessed to have!

How can you our fans and new friends join us on this adventure?  We would love to meet you for coffee or lunch at your favorite place in your area. I am also available to speak at your groups or do interviews, radio and TV spots! We will be traveling around 2500 miles round trip so I am sure we can connect in some way!  We will be in Memphis, Oklahoma City, Ft. Worth, Sparta, Gatlinburg, and all cities in between! We want to hear about what you do, and how you do it!  We have met with many in our past years of this journey, but this year we want to set a record! Contact us here at our website so we can set up a time and place, and we will be there!

Wishing each of you a great week, and hope to meet you soon!
