Formed in Detroit, the Chairmen were one of the first acts signed by songwriting legends Holland/Dozier/Holland for their Invictus label following H/D/H’s departure from Motown.

The group achieved immediate success in 1970 with the timeless classic “Give Me Just A Little More Time,” a defining early 70’s radio hit highlighted by the late lead singer General Johnson’s emotive, soulful vocals. This anchored their highly successful debut album, which also featured the beloved hit “(You’ve Got Me) Dangling on a String.” They became Soul Music’s most consistent hit-makers with memorable classics including “Finders Keepers,” “Chairman of the Board,” and “Everything’s Tuesday,” earning the distinction of being the “Kings of Beach Music” with their signature songs “Carolina Girls” and “On the Beach.”

A significant part of their legacy is “Patches,” which appeared on their first album and was co-written by General Johnson. While initially gaining recognition through Clarence Carter’s acclaimed version, it earned Johnson a prestigious Grammy Award, highlighting their exceptional songwriting talents.

Following Johnson’s passing in 2010, Ken Knox, a dedicated 38-year member, leads the ensemble alongside Patrick McGuire, Thomas Hunter, and their accomplished six-piece backing band, The Executives.
